Radical Prostatectomy

Radical prostatectomy is a type of prostate surgery in which the entire prostate gland is removed. It’s the most common method of prostate cancer surgery that is performed in order to rid the body of cancerous prostate cells, as well as any surrounding tissue that the cancer has reached. Radical prostatectomy surgery can be performed as an open prostatectomy. A retropubic prostatectomy is an open surgery that involves making an incision in the lower belly to remove the prostate tissues, whereas the perineal approach creates an incision in the groin area between the anus and the scrotum. Radical prostatectomy is also performed for extremely large prostates that do not have cancer but create prostate symptoms, such as urinary retention and other urinary symptoms such as urinary frequency, a weak stream, microscopic hematuria, and gross hematuria.

Radical prostatectomy can also be done using less invasive methods that leaves minimal scaring, less bleeding, and a faster recovery time. One method is the laparoscopic prostatectomy. At Urology Specialists our staff of laparoscopic radical prostatectomy surgeons place specialized instruments through small incisions to extract the prostate. A more advanced technological method is the da Vinci prostatectomy. Da Vinci surgery is a type of laparoscopic surgery in which the surgeon controls robotic instruments from a console. This provides more accurate movements and better control during surgery.

You can begin prostate cancer screening by getting a prostate exam. This includes a digital rectal exam (DRE) to feel if your prostate is larger than normal and if there are any lumps or nodules on the gland. Other tests include measuring the levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in your blood and detecting suspicious growths with an ultrasound machine to acquire tissue for a prostate biopsy.

At Urology Specialists we have the best US surgeons who are highly trained and experienced in all types of urologic surgery, including radical prostactectomies. Our two main radical prostatectomy South Florida surgeons are: Dr Fernando Bianco, a board certified urologist and the leading expert in da Vinci surgical techniques, and Dr. Edward Gheiler is an internationally recognized board-certified expert in urologic surgery and is fellowship-trained in urologic oncology. They are two of the best prostatectomy surgeons in Miami and the United States.

Radical prosatectomy can be the best prostate cancer cure, especially if the cancer is detected early. Alternative prostate cancer solutions include prostate cryosurgery, prostate radiation, watchful waiting, and hormone treatment. If you’re experiencing abnormal urinary symptoms, such as microscopic hematuria (microscopic traces of blood in your urine), gross hematuria (visible traces of blood in your urine), burning while urinating, urinary retention, weak urinary stream, or bone pain, call our offices for an appointment. Our staff will guide you through the evaluation and diagnosis process to determine if a radical prostatectomy or other treatment method will best treat your condition.
